Still Alive!

Bet you thought I was gone!

It's been a long time, but I never stopped doing GoodTools updates internally.

Everytime I think I'll have time to finish and QC a big update, something in real life comes up to spoil it. Chicom BioAttacks, Heavy workload in RL, it never ends.

I really appreciate all the people who have been emailing new stuff to me over the last few years. I don't have time to go to every crazy site on the net to find new stuff as much anymore (and would not, with chinese and russian malware everywhere).

I'm adding files in the order they were emailed or otherwise received. I've got over 400,000 files to process so my next release may seem to skip a couple of the most recent years for some systems. I'll get to them, but it will be the return of ZZZ_UNK_ filenames for a while.

I am going to be simplifying things to streamline my process. GoodTools is now 25 years old and some things don't make sense anymore.

1. No more testing on multiple platforms. I'm using Win10 for work and home and that's all I'll test with now. (Yea, I like Unix better, but Windows makes my money). I don't expect anything to break and my codebase has not really changed much in 15+ years. I was making special efforts to keep WinXP 64Bit Edition working since many friends use it to dump carts. Sorry about that, but just install Win10 in a VM if you need to rename on that same machine as your dumping hardware.

2. There is a longstanding bug in my code that makes GoodTools abort somewhere between processing 1000 and 10000 solid .7Z files. I've not found the bug in years of testing, but I'll put some code in my program to log it when it happens so you don't end up with half processed directories.

3. Eliminate the 'force63', 'forcexbox' and 'forceDC' commands. It takes a while for me to make sure that each new renamed file does not conflict with another when shortened to a shorter filename. I don't have the time to keep doing it.  I've seen .bat files on the net that do the same thing and since very few completely new games come out anymore, hand renaming a few files is not too bad after using one of these .bat files.

4. Eliminate the 'sepX' and 'nosep' commands. The Linux/Wine users seemed to like it but a couple lines of bash script can rename the space characters to something else if needed.

5. It was possible to scan CDs and DVDs for new ROMS and write the results to another drive.  Who's got optical media anymore? I'll be removing the special handling that put the scan and log files into either the directory with the .exe file or into C:\.  Neither of these locations is allowed by Windows anymore.

6. Eliminate the scan command for 'SICO' format data files. Maybe three users even knew about that command.

7. Eliminate internal multi-threading. If you have a PC made in the last 15 years, you didn't see a speedup and it makes a possible port to native Linux easier. Also eliminate Delay= in Goodinfo.cfg

8. Stop emailing me begging for ROMS. I'm not the only place to get a 'full set'. Look around, you might find some unknowns to add to new GoodTools releases.

In case you missed it!

I've been working on SeventeenOrBust for a long long time now. Our team 'TeamRetro' was for a long time in the top 5 producers.  The project switched to PrimeGrid this year, and has finally (after 7+ years) found its next target prime.  If you have CPU just idling away, think about joining the project. With enough CPUs, the next target won't take 7 years!

See how f'cked up the US is right now...

Hey all,  I got a msg from some fly by night place named Neustar to prove I am a US citizen in order to keep this domain.  I'm not going to hand them identity papers to let them fall into who knows whose hands.

Can you believe they would take a green card (easily faked) as proof of being a citizen? Those two don't even go together.

Those of you that know me know that I am the most 'US citizen' there is.  Sadly, this is just how f'cked up the US is right now.

So, if this domain suddenly becomes some shitty porn distro site, you know why.  Blame the US government.

You can always use www.blogger.com/cowering to get to the blog.

Everyone knows my email address, so if you have any ideas (LOL fake ID documents!) let me know within a few days.

I have a new GoodGBA and updated GoodSNES ready to go, but no sense posting them yet if they will just disappear.

New GoodSNES

Happy New Year!
I was trying to get this out before the end of 2015 but Real Life makes things slip a lot.
I'll try and get the older GoodTools that don't work in Windowns 8 or 10 redone in the next
few weeks.

NEW new copy of GoodTools Suite

Here is a copy posted on MEGA sharing site. Copy.com tech support is completely useless and I am sorry I ever suggested that ANYONE use them. Please bad mouth them everywhere you can!

New copy of GoodTools Suite

Use this new link (updated 3 times now because copy.com is a POS FUCKED UP SYSTEM) (now a .7z file)

GoodTools Suite (link removed)

Something wonky at copy.com

For some reason, some people can't load the Apr 26 copy of the GoodTools Suite.  Give it a few hours to see if copy.com's servers get fixed. I'll upload a new copy otherwise.

Something different for a change

I know it has been a long time since last post!  Busy with all kinds of projects.. Here is just one.. a complete set of Vtech V.Smile consoles, addons and games (well, the cyber pocket glared too much and the dance pad was too big for the table).  I hope the picture is available full size once I post it.

I don't know how to dump the BIOS out of each console.. but left to right on center row is the original V.smile (no microphone) V.Smile (with microphone) V.Smile Baby (with the pretty rare bailey bear controller) and the V.Smile Motion with the wireless controller and V.Link port.

If you are not in the USA and have a big pile of V.Smile games, please let me know.. They are easy to dump once you make the dumper out of a donor console. V.Smiles were sold in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, France and the UK.

The complete list of games that I have been working on is at

https://github.com/mamedev/mame/blob/master/hash/vsmile_cart.xml

and i'll update it this week for my latest finds.

...Yes, still working on other GoodTools!

Happy Thanksgiving!

New GoodSNES and GoodNES

It's been a long long time, but here is a new GoodSNES!  I am positive I forgot to add some translations that were emailed to me by a few groups. I'll get those added after I sort all the ^@*$ Mario hacks

GoodNES also is fixed for 'fixnes' command for some users of 32bit CPUS/OS combos.

Does anyone have email for...

Just a shot in the dark. Does anyone have a working email for 'BoboPJ64'? He was active until a few years ago and I need to ask him about some of his dumps.

Much appreciate any info!!

Cow

P.S.  Yes, I know about the 'fixnes' problem some of you are having with certain Windows configs and GoodNES. I've fixed it and will release a new one ASAP.

YAY, New GoodGBA and GoodNES

Finally!

I got rid of that f*cking DropBox POS.  I'm using copy.com for now.  Seems to work the same for end users and I don't have to install an app like with DropBox just to get files synced from one PC to the cloud.

If you want to help me with some more storage space, use this to login to copy.com :

If I get enough space, I'm seriously considering backing up all my scans that I have not had time to pretty up. People can then help me with them, and I can look at them while on the road looking for undumped carts. The scans are much too large for even a 64GB SD card on my tablet :(

Now to the news most people care about!

New GoodGBA and GoodNES.  These are the two that most people ask about (GoodSNES being almost a tie)
GBA and NES also have the largest number of hacks coming out of China right now, and I want to test the new UTF-8 ability.  Let me know if you encounter anything 'strange' while renaming or scanning.

Oh, and RAR support is gone for now.

Here is the link for the complete set of GoodTools.  For now I'm going to just keep one file with everything in it. It is only 15meg and everyone will have latest files.  If no bugs are found in these two tools, I'll release loads more right after New Years Day.

Have fun

Da Link :  GoodTools Suite Dec 29, 2013 Version (updated version available)

Saturday, December 28, 2013

Wow.. thanks a lot!

Nice move.. some asswipe is constantly downloading the suite of tools. Now I'm over my dropbox limit (which should NEVER happen normally).  So much for a pre-New Years release.

I'll upload the suite somewhere else if someone provides a good service. I don't like Box, nor anything with anonymous links since I can't track the number of downloads.

To RAR or not to RAR?

Well, here it is another six months later and I still have no release.  Besides being very busy, I can't get unrar5 to work with unicode/utf8 properly.

Do you guys even give a crap about RAR?   If I could decode all the C++ wrappers in 7zip to just add its unrar to the existing LZMA stuff, I'd try that, but I'm quite bad at following that code for some reason and have never figured it out :(

Out of the blue...

...I make a post!   Real life has been at 0% idle level lately, but I'm still working on GoodTools and other stuff.  I would release a new version, but there is still a nagging bug in RAR file handling that causes a BSOD and no one likes those.  If I had code to create RAR files i could figure out why my code can't decode some of them, but alas it is closed source.  Still I forge ahead.

I did get time to work on Tandy 1000 emulation in MESS last week.  It is not as well done as I'd like as many of the chips and BIOS ROMs are not dumped 100% correctly.  If you've still got a Tandy 1000 from mid 80s-mid 90s lying around, email me and we can try and get em all dumped properly. Models include things like the HX RX TX SX SL RL, etc etc.. Tandy made lots of variations.

Be back soon!
